John's of Bleecker Street

Voted BEST PIZZA! Citysearch 2000, 2001, 2002 & 2004

  • Pizza, Calzone, Pasta, Salad
  • Serving Lunch & Dinner
  • Family Friendly Environment

John's of Bleecker Street was founded in 1929 by John Sasso, and the restaurant is still in its original location. We serve coal-fired, brick oven pizza, cooked in 850-degree ovens, and made to order. Among the oldest pizzerias in the city, John's captures the spirit of the New York pie with thin crust, fresh toppings and fast service.

With its family-friendly environment and loyal following, John's serves thousands of people every week. Seating is in traditional, time-worn booths, surrounded by celebrity photos and New York memorabilia. We keep it simple and do it well, and we cordially invite you in for a pie!

Editorial Review for John's of Bleecker Street – by Dan McAlvanah

The Scene
No place is the subject of as much debate among the pizza-eating public as John's, a downtown pizzeria that many celebrities and New Yorkers consider to be the city's best sauce-and-mozzarella-pie source. The family-friendly dining rooms feature wood booths and beat-up old tables, and lines form at peak hours.

The Food
The debate between camps is largely stylistic, centering on the distribution and amount of cheese on John's pies. Unlike other New York legends like Grimaldi's or Lombardi's, which sparingly distribute mozzarella in large squarish chunks, John's scatters pebble-sized pieces that form a single uninterrupted layer of cheese when cooked. Far less contentious are John's thin, charred crust, tasty fresh sauce and generous toppings.

The menu is extremely basic, but ANYTHING you get is awesome. The pizzas are cooked to perfection and all of their toppings are fresh. They make their own sausages and meatballs. I would advise ANYONE who is not a vegetarian to try a side order of the meatballs. They are huge and delicious. Most of the servers have been working there for an extremely long time and they know their pizza. The service is fast and they know how to turn a table. You can expect a line on the weekend evenings, but it is worth the wait. PS- To the lazy person who needs their pizza delivered: Johns of Bleecker Street does not deliver. They never have, and probably will not in the future. This person clearly did not order from Johns.

Pros: MEATBALLS!!!!!

Cons: Impatient and pushy customers....it's just pizza, people.

I ordered from John's of Bleecker Street tonight and waited 1 hour and 45 minutes for my food to arrive. I called John's of Bleecker Street multiple times and was told each time that the delivery man was '5 minutes away' or that he was even 'in the building'They refused to give my the food for free, nor even any sort of discount. I would not have paid for it but took pity on the delivery man who said that if I did not then he would have to pay himself. That is outrageous. Absolutely outrageous. Do not order food from them.

Pros: nothing

Cons: eveything
