It?s Classic old Vegas hotel that is still privately owned. It has lost of history and used to be own by Buggy Segal in the early 1940?s. I asked for a smoking room and all the smoking rooms are conceded the ?vintage rooms?. I liked the idea I was staying in the vintage side of the hotel for nostalgic reasons, but I was a bit concerned that it would be a scary ugly dirty room, but it was very nice looking!!! Very clean and remodeled like everything else was. The climate control in the room was work great. The water pressure in the shower was on the weak side. But over all I was very happy. They gave me a $25 dollar food credit and other freebees. The Hotel is in a ?so-so? area of town at night but it?s only 2 short blocks up from the Fremont street action.

This is more or less what you think of with downtown, older hotels. Pretty nice, but eclipsed by its more nicely renovated neighbors. The registration is a single step from slot machines. Steakhouse, buffet and coffee shop. Modestly priced rooms make it a good deal. Not glamerous.

The El Cortez is in the older Fremont sections of town and it is pretty much what you expect...and older crowd, smoky atmosphere, lots of locals, cheap food, and no frills whatsoever. The best thing about the place is the fact that your money earns you a lot more playing time that anywhere on the Strip...so if you want to gamble, this is great...if you want all of the luxury of Vegas, go somewhere else.
