Editorial Review for KOI Las Vegas at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino – by Ryan Slattery
The Scene
New York and West Hollywood hot spot welcomes a Vegas sibling; KOI really is a must-see for its curvy design and Far East decor, not to mention the reason one comes--the food. Guests enter through hand-carved Indonesian doors, passing by giant copper temple bells and beneath three Buddhas in familiar three wise monkey poses. Dine by candlelight at oval tables in adjoining rooms bearing gold-pebbled or silver-leafed wallpaper and velvet curtains or sip a cocktail among the spinning prayer wheels in an amber-lit lounge.
The Food
KOI is known for its fresh sushi and signature dishes such as the miso-bronzed black cod and the kobe beef filet mignon. If going the sushi route, and I highly recommend you do, don't skip the dragon roll. It's among the best I've ever had. Another delicious dish is the sesame-encrusted lobster tail with a yuzu sauce that really pulls out the flavor the meat. If trying one of the specialty cocktails, such as the Sin-u-Rita or Sake-Tini, let me warn you these are all heavy pours. Be sure to save room for dessert. The molten chocolate cake, served with white and dark chocolate sauces, is to die for.

Insider Tips
Save TimeReservations are strongly recommended. KOI's locations in New York and Los Angeles are hotspots for celebrity sightings.
What to DrinkDo you need to ask? Sake, of course. KOI serves a premium selection of sakes but also has a wine list that spans the globe.
Where to SitGood question. There isn't a bad one in the house but the Fountain Room, with its copper-colored textured wallpaper, has a fantastic view of the Strip and Bellagio fountains.

The ambiance of the restaurant was very nice and there was no attitude from any of the service staff like other reviewers posted. The loud music wasn't an issue until they started play club music with bass so heavy that it was rattling the glasses on our table. If the food was truly good you could overlook that BUT...awful. Just plain awful. All the sushi tasted like it had been sitting out for a few days. One bite of sea urchin was close to inducing a gag reflex not to mention leaving you with the worst breath possible. We tried to salvage the meal by ordering off the 'hot' menu and ended up with a very average roasted duck. We ordered a comparable sushi menu at Sushi Roku a few months back and were delighted by the quality. Save yourself the trouble and just head to Sushi Roku.
Pros: Ambiance, Service staff
Cons: Food

I'll be brief... in short, I'd love to keep going back here for the food, but since the attitude is as high as a kite, I will frequent the other comparable sushi restaurants here in town. Their competition treats you better and remembers you and does something special for you. There are many choices here in town and what sets the top spots apart from the rest is that the good ones remember you. Sushi Roku, Nobu and even RM Seafood do an equal job with food but treat you far better. The bar/lounge is far too big and/or under utilized - or both. If they treated locals better, they could fill that space and create a cool scene. It's too bad because I want to like this place more and frequent it - especially in the newly revamped casino, but I'll take my business elsewhere. You guys aren't in LA, so clue in or just be another sushi joint in the ever growing landscape. Leave the 'tude' back in Hollywood where you can get away with that garbage.
Pros: Cool room with great design and look, very good food.
Cons: Attitude from staff. Over-priced, treat you like a number not a person.
