Editorial Review for The Beehive – by Eric Grossman

In Short
Spread over two floors in the Boston Center for the Arts, the Beehive attracts a suitably artsy crowd, especially before and after performances. The large space, filled with eye-catching art and ornate drapes and fixtures, is one of the neighborhood's few true late-night destinations. An eclectic assortment of live music, from jazz to cabaret, is offered most nights. Patrons select from a Mediterranean-tinged menu of shareable bites (charcuterie plates, a "jar of pickles") and pricier, more substantial fare (lamb ribs with house-made garlic sausage, pappardelle with wild mushrooms and creamy ricotta).

Insider Tips

What to Drink

Befitting its artsy vibe, the Beehive serves its drinks in offbeat holders (wine's served in brandy snifters, beer in mugs with handles).

When to Go

Weekend brunch service, offered from 10:30am-3pm, features live music and such inviting fare as brandied-fruit French toast and Eggs Shakshuka (three eggs baked over North African-style tomato sauce, served with creamy polenta).

Where to Sit

A small but in-demand patio offers views of lively South End foot traffic, though those seated outside aren't able to hear the interior stage's nightly live music.

User Reviews for The Beehive

5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended

Have been there twice, Beehave has great music, drinks and food...what else could you ask for. The lines on the weekends can get long, so get there early.

Pros: Excellent bohemian ambience

Cons: Can get loud sometimes

1 Star Rating: Not Recommended

A pity that this venue, catering to the non-student crowds of Boston (finally), has such a horrid manager and hosting staff. As all of the legitimate reviews written by customers state - the manager (in my case, the man downstairs) is incredibly unprofessional. When my table expanded by one paying dinner customer, we took a chair from an empty table. Manager made my dinner guest stand up, as he said the chair belonged to the empty table. !!! Was he trained for customer service in the Soviet Union? I found amusing the few 5 star reviews that were obviously written by the Beehive management. Plenty of other places in the S End. Mr. Manager, time to shape up!! Doormen - stop making people wait 60-90 minutes only to be forced to stand upstairs (unless bribed). Beehive - home of the Soviet style "service".

Pros: Over-30s scene; live music

Cons: MANAGEMENT, "service"; exagerated lines to get in and being forced to stay upstairs
