Editorial Review for Comme Ca – by Martha Burr
The Scene
Sona's visionary chef/owner David Myers has hit another home run with this casually glamorous Melrose brasserie. Colorful industry elites pop out against the smart black-and-white main dining room, while upscale professionals and bon vivants raise evening chatter to a shout-across-the-table din. Black-clad movers and shakers mob the lively raw bar, toasting their latest deals with nostalgic cocktails like the Rumble.
The Food
The classic French brasserie fare suits the demanding professionals that it draws. Standbys such as the sweetly tender escargot persillade--Burgundy snails in a satiny paste of butter, garlic and parsley--illustrate the simple yet sophisticated appeal of the menu's starters. The high-minded theme continues with a luxuriant roasted beef marrow accompanied by savory oxtail jam, while things come down to earth with the fairly standard bouillabaisse. Daily specials should not be missed, especially the leg of lamb that marries mouth-melting tenderness with a garlic-tinged gamey flavor.
Hits: The dishes are well executed and the restaurant captures L.A.'s casually cool energy at its best.
Misses: Hidden costs can give diners a jolt, like the $7 cappuccino or $5 per person charge for bottled water. The noise level on weekend evenings is extreme and even guests with reservations may have to wait at the tiny, packed bar.

While visiting from that other coast, my wife and I went to Comme Ce for brunch and got more than expected. To begin with, we were greeted by their hostess, Max, who immediately put a smile on our faces with her absolutely charming personality. It's so nice to feel welcome! Our waiter was very attentive and polite. The manager and the chef came out and introduced themselves. I'm sorry, but I just didn't expect people in L.A. to be so friendly. Mind you that the place at that moment wasn't that busy, but the manager and the chef could have hid in the back instead of coming out to greet us. As more and more people started to come in you could see everyone putting their game face on. However, our waiter was still very attentive and the food was excellent. I enjoyed the staff so much that a bologna sandwich would have been fine. Max must be their first impression.
Pros: Food and Staff
Cons: Too far from the East coast

I took 6 of my associates to dinner at Comm Ca. I was really looking forward to dining at the restaurant, ever since I read a review in the Angeleno magazine. A friend had dined there recently and had owned a restaurant for many years. He said he "liked the restaurant, but the service wasn't very good". I, for one, did not like the restaurant and found the service to be moderately awful. For a dinner costing $600 when all is said and done for 7 people with a couple of appetizers and without desserts, coffees or many drinks, the service should be at a much higher level. The restaurant was overly warm and we had to ask someone to turn on some air. I thought my guests would be more comfortable once they could have a drink, but unfortunately, they don't carry any of the brands of liquor that anyone at the table drink. I have never been in a restaurant with such a limited bar offering in my life, except one that had no liquor license. One guest settled for a "gin" and tonic but got some drink that had won some taste competition that my guest didn't like. We requested the gin and tonic originally ordered, but it would be much later when I asked the waiter what happened to the drink before it would appear. Two guests ordered beef stroganoff that arrived as what my guests described as cold. No server seemed to know who ordered what the entire meal, food or drinks. By the time anyone asked us about desserts, we just wanted to end the less than memorable evening and go home. The good of the evening: the hostess (pleasant and accommodating), the bread (great), the decor The bad: the service (unattentive, forgetful) the drinks, the ice in the drinks (2 large cubes frozen into 1 block) The mediocre: almost all the food, butter (hard), the chairs (plastic) The raves given by my guests: none The embarrassed: me for dragging these people across town to Comm Ca
Pros: Hostess, the bread
Cons: moderally awful service, mediocre food
