Editorial Review for The Artisan Hotel and Spa – by Ryan Slattery

In Short
This casino-free, 65-room bohemian hotel exudes a hipster vibe and attracts 20-something rockers and young artists. Artwork by contemporary and classic artists like Cezanne, Dali, Da Vinci and Van Gogh cover the walls in the lobby and on the black-walled rooms and ceilings. Standard room amentities include cable TV, coffeemaker, hair dryer and iron. The Masterpiece Suite features a leopard-print couch and billiards table. The hotel also features a cafe, lounge and spa.

The guy that said that it looked okay until you got to the elevators was dead on, except that we thought it was scary from the moment we walked in the lobby. My friend said it best, "It looks like the kind of place you see in horror movies. The kind where you go in and never come out." I guarantee if you stay here you'll definitely want to come right back out. The elevators are spooky, and so were both of the rooms we saw. Yes, we saw two rooms because the room they originally sent us to was not ready. As in it looked as if the previous renters had left about 10 minutes prior to our arrival. It was a mess. The room we ended up staying in wasn't a whole lot better. the bathroom was disgusting (there was urine on the floor) the toilet barely worked, and the faucet handle kept coming off whenever you tried to wash your hands. Our room was right on the freeway side, so I guess it's a good view if you like looking out the window at the 15 (not to mention HEARING the 15 freeway). The staff did as little as they possibly could to resolve our issues, and the assistant manager was one of the most arrogant, condescending persons I've come across in life period, not just when it comes to hotel staff. He didnt offer so much as an apology, and was absolutely not subtle about the fact that he didn't want to be bothered with us. Our reservation was for 2 days but we checked out the morning after our 1st night there, we have no intention of going back, and want to warn any others that may consider staying at this hotel.

Pros: Nothing

Cons: Everything

My brother and I stayed here a while back because it looked good on the website and it was one of the few rooms available that weekend. Overall it was a pretty bad experience. They had done renovations on a budget hotel and redid it, calling itself The Artisan. The lobby is pretty cool and it looks good until you get to the elevator. It was kinda' scary and definitely dumpy looking. Our room's commode didn't work and the night desk manager had to come up with a plunger to "fix" it. It is right next to the freeway so we didn't sleep at all from all the traffic noise. The next morning we left and forgot something so when we tried to go back into our room, the key cards didn't work. We went to the check in desk and they told us they gave us the wrong room, one that hadn't been renovated yet, so we had to move rooms in the middle of the day and waste about an hour trying to get in, repack, and get new key cards. The second room we got at least had a commode that worked, but the room was as dumpy as the first. I DO NOT recommend staying here, even if the room is free. Until they upgrade the entire place, and take care of the traffic noise, it is not an enjoyable stay.

Cons: What amenities??? Traffic noise due to freeway close by
