My wife and I lived in Deer Springs Apartments for four years. We had our occasional disagreements with management but nothing serious. Over the course of our tenancy we, always with the permission of management, "upgraded" the apartment. We painted, put up a chair rail, and put up contact paper borders. Representatives of the management company were in our "home" on a regular basis and marveled at the beauty of it. They, in fact, wrote a wonderful letter to our new landlord saying what great tenants we were and how we kept the apartment immaculate.
Approximately two weeks after moving out we received an inventory of costs from the apartment complex. It totaled $4300+ and included replacement of some carpeting, painting, and ozone-something to get the smoke smell out. This was NOT a non-smoking apartment!!! The inventory also said that we "skipped" on the rent and the remaining lease.
Our rent was paid in full to the day we left and had given notice of our intent to move 30 days before move out. Beware of this tactic as I just spoke to a former tenant to whom the same thing was done. Her husbands paycheck was garnished and they hadn't been notified of any court hearings and had not been notified of any liens.
