In Short – Less than 40 miles from the Strip, this is an extremely popular escape for residents and visitors. For one thing, the mountain reaches 12,000 feet at its highest, making for temperatures averaging 25 to 30 degrees below that of the valley it overlooks. In addition, there's camping, hiking and backpacking, with trails that range from easy one-milers up to those taking several weeks. In spring, trails are full of wildflowers.

Various campgrounds (both RV and tent sites) are best reserved in advance by calling the ranger station; even picnic areas can be full during summer weekends and holidays.

The North Loop Trail is an impressive hike, featuring groves of twisted bristlecone pines, trees that are among the oldest living things on earth.
