The Story
Casinos carefully control their patrons' exposure to clocks; ironic, then, that a clock becomes the tourists' symbol of Las Vegas. Maverick Las Vegan Steve Miller, a former city councilman, is credited with inventing the dice clock for his father's Vegas-based novelty business. Though Papa purportedly despised the clock, the timepiece soon became a best seller and a Vegas icon.

The Construction
It's not all that complex, bub: twenty-three casino die; a battery operated clock motor sporting goldtone hands and a square of thick plastic, typically silkscreened with "Fabulous Las Vegas" in glitter. The standard three year warranty likely outlasts the clocks' hang time. —James P. Reza
